Toyota/FAW Recall More Than 120,000 Cars in China
Dec. 26 – Toyota began recalling over 120,000 Lexus, Crown and Reiz luxury sedans manufactured at their Tianjin JV with China’s FAW Group today.
According to China Daily, problems with faulty steering electric powered units could cause the batch of vehicles manufactured between 2004-06 to fail, according to a notice posted on the on the website of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine. The JV will contact owners of the affected vehicles, conduct checks and replace defective parts without charge according to the notice.
The news comes as Toyota’s global sales plunged by over 21 percent from the same volume last year, prompting the company to declare its first loss in 70 years. The news comes as a slew of problematic China-made products with Chinese JV partners have hit the headlines over the past 12 months. Toyota Tianjin also recalled 84,000 of its Vois and Corolla models in October this year with manually operated shift stick problems. It is understood that Toyota is now conducting a specific management audit at the plant under rumors of executive wrongdoing.
