Oct. 5 – Dezan Shira & Associates Founding Partner Chris Devonshire-Ellis is attending the APEC CEO Summit the next few days and will be reporting on discussions and speeches made at the event exclusively on our Asia Briefing portal.
APEC is a forum for 21 Pacific Rim countries aimed at discussing, exploring and developing multilateral ties, and the upcoming CEO Summit is attended by the most senior levels of government – including prime ministers, foreign ministers and financial ministers – as well as selectively chosen business leaders. It is an invitation-only forum. APEC member nations/territories include Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Taiwan, United States and Vietnam.
U.S. President Barack Obama, scheduled to attend but dealing with the government shut down back in Washington, will instead be represented by Secretary of State John Kerry. However, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, along with the heads of state from all other member countries are expected to give speeches and presentations concerning the development of the APEC bloc and lay out its future plans and challenges.
