China Approves Guidelines to Boost Development in Yangtze Delta
SHANGHAI, Aug. 8 – China’s State Council has approved new guidelines aimed to spur development of the Yangtze River Delta region.
The guidelines outline that the region should expedite its industrial restructuring and create an industrial structure with a modern service industry as the pillar.
The region includes the areas of Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces and is considered one of the major economic engines of the country.
China wants the region to intensify efforts to upgrade industry and manufacturing capacity with an emphasis on innovation and sustainable development. It also plans to work on the development of rural and urban areas.
The set of guidelines will work towards modernizing its agricultural sector, conserving energy and land, protecting the environment and improving its employment and social security systems.
During the meeting presided by Premier Wen Jiabao, the State Council also touched on the feasibility of a unified open market system for the region.
